EU AI Act
Also called Artificial Intelligence Act, AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689.
EU AI Act is the usual name for Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the European Union’s law on artificial intelligence. It sorts AI uses by risk: a few are banned, some need transparency, and high-risk uses such as some recruitment tools carry strict duties, which the Digital Omnibus of July 2026 put back to 2 December 2027.
Think of it as
Product safety rules, scaled to how much harm a use could do.
Why it matters at work
It can apply to a UK organisation that sells AI systems into the EU, whose AI output is used there, or that runs AI through an EU branch; a business whose AI use stays entirely within the UK generally isn’t covered. Module 7 looks at what it means for decisions about people.
